Towing the line of his counterparts, Kanchi Shankracharya Jayendra Saraswati too slammed yoga guru Baba Ramdev for the Ramlila Ground incident. The seer, who was in the city to attend a Rashtriya Swamsevak Sangh (RSS) function, called Ramdev's action a political stunt even as he aired his own intentions to launch a political party with an apparent Hindutva tinge. Saraswati did not spare social activist Anna Hazare too.
"Both, Baba's hunger strike and the midnight action by the police were nothing but a political drama and so is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trying to get political mileage of the situation," said the Kanchi seer, adding that only RSS, his host for the day, was sincere in its efforts.
Less than 24 hours ago, he was daring the government in front of thousands of supporters at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. Forced out of the capital and with the Uttar Pradesh government foiling his plans to reach Noida, yoga guru Baba Ramdev, back at his sprawling headquarters here tonight, found himself isolated but continued his fast.
A visibly shaken and exhausted Ramdev appealed to people in Uttarakhand and Western UP to join him. Clearly, he wanted numbers. The desperation was showing as he did not lash out at the BSP government which flashed the no-entry sign at him but said that he urged “respectful sister” Mayawati to reconsider her decision.
Not more than 50 supporters watched him re-launch his fast within the precincts of the Patanjali Yogapeeth complex. There was no over-enthusiasm on the part of the BJP government in Uttarakhand either although chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank did drop in to offer moral support.
Coming down on Hazare,Kanchi Shankracharya said even the earlier hunger strike was a publicity stunt quickly called off after he was inducted in the Lokpal Bill drafting committee. "Who had heard of Anna before that? I guess he had not more than a handful of followers in his home state of Maharashtra," said the Shankaracharya.
However, Saraswati promptly spoke of his own plans of floating a political party. Called Hindustan Nationalist Party, he said it will be secularist and open to all. Remaining on the backstage, the seer said he would field young candidates in the coming elections. The party's agenda would include shunning foreign direct investment and promoting Gandhian ideals of rural economy.
