The RSS and their political wing, the BJP always carried the legacy as the assassinators of our father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi. This public perception worsened when Sushma Swaraj, the BJP's opposition leader broke out in a tranced jig at Rajghat, Gandhiji's samadhi. Dressed in a crisp, cream-coloured jamdani sari and without a hair out of place, Sushma shook a leg with young MP Anurag Thakur at a venue historically associated with sobriety and reflection. Party functionaries with leaders like Vijendra Gupta and others clapped away and as she ended her performance to the patriotic song, there were sounds of people whistling.
Political rivals , particularly the Congress and a section of the media was quick to condemn Swaraj's disrespect at the samadhi. of Gandhiji, some going to accuse the saffron brigade of celebrating Gandhi is dead, cold and buried! The Union health minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, took a dig at the BJP’s satyagrah and said: “The BJP have no sympathy for Ramdev. They are dancing at Rajghat.” He wondered “ whether it is for celebration or mourning or they dancing for Ramdevji’s arrest...” AICC general secretary, Mr Janardan Dwivedi said: “What kind of fast is this, when the leader of the Opposition is dancing along with her friends at Gandhi samadhi.”
Her dancing, however, has not gone down well with some top leaders of the party like LK Advani and Arun Jaitley though they chose top keep quiet, publicly, who the media reported nevertheless ticked her off in private. Ms Swaraj, however, was “shocked” to see the television channels highlighting her dance. The Leader of the Opposition tweeted saying that she was “shocked that the dancing is the sole clipping picked up as representative visual of the satyagraha.” She went on: “It is the tradition of our party that we sing patriotic songs during all our protests"
Earlier, consultant Suhel Seth, a columnist, had tweeted with typical sarcasm: “So we’ve done with yoga! Now I am waiting for a Kathak dancer to take over India Gate!!!” It’s not clear whether Sushma follows Seth’s tweets, especially after he had joked about her posts when she joined the Twitter club last December, posting: “Can someone like Sushma Swaraj be on Twitter because Twitter has IQ barriers?”
